How to Make a Homemade Pecan Pie with Apples

top view of fresh baked pecan pie with apples on serving board on table

I absolutely love the texture that apples bring to a pecan pie. It’s such a warm and happy flavor that never fails to remind me of holidays with my family.

And that’s because this recipe has been made in my home as long as I can remember. And over all those years, it still is a favorite whenever I serve it.

It’s perfect for a homemade pie crust, but you can speed things up a bit by using a premade crust. No worries, if you need a great crust recipe, I’ll give you my favorites below.

Prep is super easy, and only takes a few minutes. Bake time is a little over an hour, so it’s a great pie to bake while prepping dinner.

For equipment, you will need a 9″ pie pan and a saucepan. This recipe yields one 9″ pecan pie, but if you need two pies, just double the recipe.

Instead of chopping your pecans, you can keep them whole or halved and arrange the top layer of pecans for an even prettier presentation.

Pecan Apple Pie Ingredients

This is a traditional style recipe, but most of the ingredients are quite common so you may have what you need on hand already.

And when it comes to your apples, you have multiple types you can use. But I recommend going with Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. The flavor is so good and it produces the perfect texture.

Ingredients List

  • Apples
  • Pecans (chopped)
  • Eggs
  • Brown Sugar
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Corn Syrup
  • Pie Crust

Apples: When baking with apples, there are some types that work better than others. Like I noted above, I recommend going with Granny Smith or Golden Delicious, but you can go with any of the following if that’s all you have available.

  • Golden Delicious (2 large apples)
  • Granny Smith (2-3 apples)
  • McIntosh (4 apples)
  • Braeburn (3-4 apples)
  • Jonagold (3-4 apples)

Corn Syrup: This is a common sweetener used in traditional pecan pie recipes, and out of traditions sake I still use it often to this day. But, if you prefer a different sweetener, there are a number of others you can use to make your pie. Go with honey, maples syrup, or light molasses. Use a 1:1 substitution ratio when replacing corn syrup in your pecan pie.

Pecans: Before chopping your pecans, reserve a handful if you plan to top your pie with whipped cream. Sprinkle your reserved pecans halves on top of your whip cream. It makes a great looking presentation.

Pie Crust Options

You can use a premade or a homemade pastry crust for your pie. It really comes down to time, if you are too busy to make your own, any brand pie crust will work. Just make sure it’s a 9″ crust.

But, making your own crust is a great way to add to an already amazing tasting pie. There are many great pie crust recipes out there, but I’ll link to some of my personal favorites below.

All of them will taste great with your pecan apple pie.
