To prevent illness from bacteria: keep eggs refrigerated, cook eggs until yolks are firm, and cook foods containing eggs thoroughly. Eggs that have been treated to destroy Salmonella—by in-shell pasteurization, for example—are not required to carry safe handling instructions, but the labeling will usually say that they have been treated.

This recipe is not only quick to make, it also only calls for a handful of simple ingredients. But don’t let the lack of ingredients fool you, this recipe is packed with rich and delicious flavor.

Ingredient List

  • Unsweetened Chocolate Squares
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Butter
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Eggs

Chocolate Squares: Sometimes you’ll find these called baker’s chocolate squares. Whatever the name they will work, just make sure to use unsweetened chocolate. While you can technically substitute unsweetened cocoa powder mixed with a fat, I highly recommend sticking to chocolate squares for this recipe.

Butter: Go with salted butter for your frosting. If all you have is unsalted butter on hand, you can use it but you will need to add a pinch of salt to your frosting.
