And making your pies ahead of time can be a real time saver when making that big holiday dinner.

But how far in advance can you make your pie while it still tasting great when served? You can store your cherry pie in the refrigerator or freezer if you properly prepare.

Read on for how long you can store a cherry pie and the simple way to safely do so.

How Long Does Frozen Cherry Pie Last?

A properly wrapped and stored frozen cherry pie will keep for up to 8 months in most cases.

For best results, though, you should store your pie in the fridge.

So for all of you who wonder how long cherry pie lasts, know that it should be stored at a temperature below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or if the storage area is less than 35% relative to humidity.

There’s no likelihood of water damage. Otherwise, refrigeration is recommended.

In general, though, the shelf life will vary depending on what type of crust (pie shell) was used, whether sugar has been added, how much butter (or shortening), etc.

If there’s cornstarch, this could extend its lifespan since it absorbs moisture and prevents sogginess.

But generally speaking, a good rule-of-thumb is about 5 – 6 days before any signs of spoilage start showing.

Most supermarkets keep the pies on a shelf-life of about three to five days.

This is only true for refrigerated (not frozen) varieties, however.

How Long Does Opened Cherry Pie Filling Last?

If you have leftover cherry pie filling, no need to throw it out.

You can store opened cherry pie filling in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

First place your leftover pie filling in a glass or plastic container and securely cover it before placing it in the fridge.

You can also store homemade cherry pie filling in the refrigerator in the same manner. Since homemade cherry pie filling has no artificial preservatives it will stay good in the refrigerator for up to one week.

You can check that your pie filling is still good by smelling it. If there is any off odor then your pie filling is no longer good.
