This super flavorful and creamy Orange Chocolate Chip Ice Cream is one of my favorite recipes to make when oranges are in season.
The zest is so aromatic and the custard base is so creamy it’s heavenly. Add in some delicious sweet chocolate chips and you have an ice cream masterpiece.
I was lucky enough to grow up with an aunt who owned a small town bakery and she made her own ice cream, which I was the official taste tester! She rotated in and out different flavors and her orange zest chocolate swirl ice cream was one of my all time favorites.
She knew how much I adored this ice cream and I think she made it more often than she would have otherwise. She was such a wonderful person. And just like she would do, I make this creamy and delightful ice cream for my children too. It’s just perfect for those hot summer nights. We like to sit together on the porch with a bowl and talk with the kids.
How to Make Orange Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

And making this ice cream is easy to boot! You will chill it for 12 to 24 ours but the rest of prep is only about an hour and you will have a quart of the creamiest homemade ice cream you can ask for.
The orange zest and chocolate swirls with a creamy custard base is a flavor dream come true. And it smells so refreshing you won’t believe it.
Ice Cream Ingredients
- 2 Cups Heavy Cream
- 5 Large Egg Yolks
- 3/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1 Cup Whole Fat Milk
- Orange Zest
- 1 tsp. Sea Salt
- 1 Tbs. Fresh Lemon Juice
- 2 tsp. Pure Vanilla Extract
Chocolate Chip Ingredients
- 3/4 Cup Chopped Dark Chocolate
- 1/2 tsp. Salt
First take out a large mixing bowl and fill it with ice and cold water. In a separate bowl add a quarter cup of granulated sugar and egg yolks. Hand whisk them until creamy, it should only take you a couple of minutes. Then set it aside.
In a medium saucepan add your remaining granulated sugar, whole fat milk, and heavy cream. Heat it over medium for about two to three minutes. At this point your sugar will be dissolved and your milk will be simmering.

Lower the heat to prevent burning and then add a half a cup of your milk mixture to your egg yolks. Whisk them until combined.
Add another half cup of milk mixture and continue to whisk. Now take your yolk mixture and pour it into your saucepan and continue to hand whisk it the entire time.
Now take out your spatula and stir slowly while it remains over low heat. This is now becoming a custard!
As soon as the custard coats a spoon when lifted out of the pot and holds it remove it from the heat.
Add you orange zest and stir it in. Next add your vanilla extract and lemon juice to the custard while stirring.
Once stirred in pour the custard immediately into a bowl and place the bowl in your cold water and ice bowl (don’t pour your custard actually into the ice water!)
Wait until your ice cream mixture cools down to a warm temperature and then cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Place it in your freezer to chill for at least a few hours before moving on.

Now make your chocolate chips by melting your chopped dark chocolate in a saucepan over low heat stirring constantly. Once melted pour your chocolate over parchment paper lined baking sheet and spread it out into a thin layer.
Now just sprinkle your salt over the chocolate and chill it in the freezer for about twenty minutes. Once chilled, take out and chop it into desired size.
Now it’s time to add your ice cream to your ice cream maker. Check your models instructions for proper churn time. When there is just a couple minutes left to churn, add in your chocolate chunks. Once done, chill in airtight container overnight and then you’re done!
